Barrel racing

Roping lessons

Lone Star Cowboy Church of Ellis County in Red Oak hosts calf/breakaway roping lessons from 6-9 p.m. Mondays at its covered arena. ECEA monthly meeting

The Ellis County Equine Association meets at 6:30 p.m. the third Thursday of each month at White Rhino Coffee House in Waxahachie. Anyone interested in learning more about the club or helping is welcome to attend.

Yoga with horses

The Waxahachie Family YMCA has open registration every month for karate. Children must be registered by the 5th of the month to participate in that month’s activities. Big O Speedway schedule

ENNIS – Big O Speedway hosts dirt tracking racing to the area on Friday and Saturday nights through November. The pits open at 5 p.m. Friday and 4:30 p.m. Saturday with the grandstands opening at 6 p.m. on Friday and 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Hot laps take place at 7:45 p.m. Friday and 6:45 p.m. Saturday. These are followed by pro late model qualifying at 8:15 p.m. Friday and 7:15 p.m. Saturday. The racing action starts at 8:15 p.m. Friday and 7:15 p.m. Saturday.

Big O Speedway is located at 3118 Farm-to-Market 85 in Ennis. General admission is $15. Seniors 65+ or military with ID is $12. Children ages 3-10 years old are $8; 2 and younger are free. Awareness walk

The Heights Ellis County Family Resources is hosting a one-mile walk, “Walk a Mile in our Shoes,” to raise awareness about domestic violence from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 2, in downtown Waxahachie and on the city park trail. Starts at the northeast corner of the courthouse square.

Hike for Life

The Knights of Columbus Council 8417 is sponsoring the 48th annual Hike for Life on Saturday, Oct. 2, at Getzendaner Park in Waxahachie. Registration for the Hike begins at 8 a.m., followed by the opening prayer, introductions, and speakers at 8:30 a.m. The hike itself begins at 9 a.m.

The Waxahachie hike is the primary fundraiser for pro-life ministries in Ellis County, including FirstLook Pregnancy Center, Project Gabriel, and the parish’s pro-life Group. Toys for Tots golf tourney

The first Ellis County Toys for Tots Classic golf tournament will be held Monday, Oct. 4, at the Old Brickyard Golf Course in Ferris.

The annual campaign will see the purchase of toys, books, and stocking stuffers for children in need this Christmas season, along with covering minimal operating costs to run the program in the county.

Fees are as follows: four-person team $400, individual player $100, player super ticket $50, putting contest entry $20, player mulligan $20, million dollar shootout battle ticket $10 and awards reception ticket $10. Sponsorships are diamond $5,000, dinner $2,500, gold $2,000, silver $1,000, website $625, beverage $500, putting contest $500, cart $500, million dollar shootout $500, hole in one $300, golf ball $300, pin flag $150 and tee box $100.

Registration begins at 11 a.m., when the silent auction also opens. A barbecue lunch is at 11:30 a.m., with a shotgun start rain or shine at 1 p.m. Drawing for the million dollar shot is at 6 p.m., with the dinner/awards reception at 6:30 p.m. The silent auction closes at 6:30 p.m.

Walk-a-thon benefit

The Ellis County Homeless Coalition is having a fundraising walk-a-thon from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 16 called Project Shelter: One Step at a Time to raise money for a shelter. It’s being held at Railyard Park and involves the nearby walking trails (Getzendaner and the Hike & Bike Trail). Nature walk

The Indian Trail Master Naturalist Chapter will lead a free nature walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at Mockingbird Nature Park, 1361 Onward Road, off of Mockingbird Lane, in Midlothian.

Plan for about 1.5 hours for the half-mile walk. Closed-toe shoes, comfortable outdoor clothing and insect repellent are recommended. The walk is canceled in the event of rain.

Lighthouse for Learning offers an outdoor learning experience to find and identify birds from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23. The cost is $15; register at https://bit.ly/35HLVkg. The class will meet in the parking area near the first set of restrooms at the hike and bike trail in Getzendaner Park in Waxahachie. Bring binoculars if possible, as it is difficult to see many birds without them. The instructor will go through some pointers and suggestions for finding and identifying birds in the park, as well as providing identification strategies. Be prepared to walk a couple of miles on various surfaces. The instructor is Susan Kosoris, a certified North Central Texas Master Birder.
