Roy Lawson Cockerham

Roy Lawson Cockerham, son of the late Sidney Julius Cockerham and Joan (Barlow) Cockerham, second of three children, was born on May 20, 1954 in Waxahachie, Texas. Roy passed away on Nov. 19, 2018 in Waxahachie at the age of 64. 

He received his education through Waxahachie public schools. While attending Waxahachie High School he was a member of the band, National Honor Society, Who’s Who in American student and the high school tennis team. Roy excelled at tennis. After graduating from Waxahachie High School in 1972, he continued his education at the University of Texas at Arlington where he was inducted into the National Honor Society of Spanish students. Roy received his bachelor’s degree from UTA in 1976. 

He was employed as a Spanish teacher and technology coordinator at Venus High School from 1986- 2014. While teaching in Venus ISD, Roy coached tennis and in his capacity as the district’s technology coordinator he helped transition the district into the computer age. Roy received the “Teacher of the Year” award at Venus, Texas high school. He loved teaching and was dedicated to shaping and directing the minds of future generations. Roy will be deeply missed and the memories he created with so many will be forever cherished.

Roy is survived by his brother, Sidney Joe Cockerham of Dallas; sister, Julia Thompson and husband Shane of Weatherford; nieces, Jillian Arthur and her husband Dustin, Sarah Parker and husband Reed; nephew, J.J. Jaggers and wife Kathryn; great nephew, Logan Jaggers; his dearest friends, Diane and Les Owens of Venus, Susie and John Thompson of Waxahachie, along with other family and friends. 

Visitation for Roy will be Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018 from 1-2 p.m. at Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Chapel in Waxahachie. A Memorial Service will directly follow at 2 p.m.
