Dixie Lou Burks, age 67, went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2021, in her home after a long illness.Dixie was born Sept. 29, 1954, in Spokane, Washington and grew up a military kid as her father served in the United Stated Air Force for 23 years.


People knew Dixie to be a strong and independent woman, yet gentle and selfless. Dixies many accomplishments include putting herself through Bible college and earning a nursing degree while raising her son as a single parent.She was an accomplished painter, a master gardener, a prolific reader, a college instructor, and a respected Sunday school teacher, but her true passion was prayer and service to others.


Dixie is preceded in death by her father, Joe Smithwick, her mother Marti Vantreese, and her youngest sister Jeri Smithwick.  She is survived by the love of her life, Larry Burks, her son, Joel Bryant and wife Jennifer, her daughter Katy Warsing and husband Paul, sister Jeanie Shivers and husband Allan, brother Joe Smithwick and wife Judy, and brother John Smithwick and wife Donna.She is also survived by six cherished grandchildren:Joel, Nyssa, and Ezri Bryantand Tait, Gavin and Sutton Warsing.


A memorial service will be held in The Venue located at The Avenue Church in Waxahachie (1761 US 77) at 6:30 PM on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021. Masks are suggested for the safety of all those who attend but are not required.
