The Rotary Club of Waxahachie presented a $1,000 check to Waxahachie CARE on Tuesday afternoon.

“The reason for today’s donation is to help families from the many COVID-19 pandemic hardships they are facing,” Rotarian Billie Wallace said, noting the increased demands that have been placed on the community’s food bank.

“We are honored and blessed to have Rotary Club of Waxahachie partner with us to help our neighbors,” said executive director Kim Holman, who was joined by her husband and co-worker Wade Holman and co-worker Donna Williams in accepting the check. Also present were Rotarians Ann Montgomery, Lynne Grandstaff, Judy Demoney, Scott DeFord, Lee Strahan, Jerry Chapman and David Hill, who also serves as Waxahachie mayor. Rotarians Peggy Crabtree and Mickie Hill, club president, were unable to attend.

In operation since 1993, the nonprofit’s mission statement is “Neighbors caring for neighbors in need by providing food and other resources."

Holman said requests for help have doubled during the pandemic. The organization’s funding comes from the Waxahachie Foundation, businesses, churches, clubs and organizations as well as individuals. Other recent donors have included TXU, which made a donation toward the payment of electric bills, Holman said, noting that basic demographics are kept, such as the number of family members and if the required assistance is due to COVID-19, in determining what help is needed.

In addition to providing food, Waxahachie Care helps with utility bills and other needs, with Holman saying CARE never turns anyone away.

Holman has been with Waxahachie Care since October 2019; her husband and Williams also came on board that year.

The Rotary Club has also partnered with a Facebook group Wallace recently formed, Waxahachie Have It or Need It.

CARE's distribution hours are from 9 a.m.-noon Monday-Thursday.

Its office hours are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and from 9 a.m.-noon Friday.

The nonprofit is located at 1208 Ferris Ave. in Waxahachie.
