Historic Waxahachie Inc. presented a check for $500 to Emily Mackel, the first recipient of the HWI Essay Scholarship, during the recent Waxahachie High School Senior Awards Night ceremony Tuesday, May 14.
HWI board member and scholarship committee member, Kirk Davis, made the presentation.
“The HWI Scholarship Committee had a very difficult decision to make as all of the applicant essays were interesting and very well written,” according to an HWI media release. “HWI is proud of all of the students who applied and proud that we are able to make this scholarship available to a deserving graduate.”
Mackel wrote about Getzendaner Park, with her essay including the history of the park, the prominent role it has played in the city’s history and what the park has meant to her personally over the years. She will attend Dallas Baptist University in the fall.
“By providing this scholarship, HWI hopes that the students will remember that history is more than just reading a book and remembering dates and names,” the HWI media release reads. “It is about personal stories and how they affect us. We also hope that these students will remember the rich history of Waxahachie that will always be an important part of their lives.”
