With its active COVID-19 case count now at 405, Ellis County has experienced a 650% increase in that number since it posted a low of 54 cases July 1.

Concurrently, covid-related hospitalizations are increasing as well, with 60 people in Ellis County facilities as of Aug. 4 – that’s also a 650% increase since July 8’s report of eight hospitalizations. Of those currently hospitalized, 11 are in ICU.

County officials have declined comment to the Sun on the increase in cases.

Ellis County reported its first case of COVID-19 on March 17, 2020, peaking at about 1,340 active cases Jan. 15, 2021. The county then dropped to below 100 active cases as of April 18, maintaining numbers in the 60-80 range through about June 22, when the numbers dipped further, into the 50s.

As of Aug. 4, the independent, nonprofit Covid Act Now dashboard classifies both the state of Texas overall and Ellis County as “very high” risk. Texas continues to slightly increase its vaccination rate and now has 43.9% of its population fully vaccinated, with 52.1% having received one or more doses.

Ellis County continues to slightly increase its vaccination rate, with 37.1% of its estimated 180,000 residents now fully vaccinated while 44% have received at least one dose.

Covid Act Now shows Texas as reporting 37.3 cases per 100,000 people, a 1.36 infection rate and a 16.5% positive test rate. Ellis County is reporting 36.2 cases per 100,000 people, a 1.42 infection rate and a 15.7% positive test rate.

As of Aug. 4, the DSHS data dashboard showed the following cumulative data for Ellis County:

• Confirmed cases to date – 19,524

• Probable cases to date – 4,490

• Fatalities to date – 325

• Active cases – 405

• Recoveries to date – 23,530

Total tests to date – 223,384
