COVID-19 cases are on the rise in Ellis County, according to the state’s Department of State Health Services data dashboard. As of Thursday afternoon, July 15, the county’s active case count stood at 136.

Of those active cases, county officials report 16 people are hospitalized at this time, double the number that were hospitalized one week ago (July 8).

The Sun has inquired as to whether any of the cases are the result of the virus’ more transmissible Delta or Delta-Plus variants but has not received any confirmation to that effect.

Ellis County had dropped below 100 active cases as of April 18, maintaining numbers in the 60-80 range through about June 22, when the numbers dipped further, into the 50s.

July 2 was the last report of an active case count in the 50s, with the county more than doubling its active case rate since.

The active case count since the first of the month is as follows:

• July 1 – 54

According to the independent, nonprofit Covid Act Now dashboard, the state of Texas has 43% of its population fully vaccinated, with 49% having received one or more doses.

Ellis County has posted a slightly higher vaccination rate than the state average, with the latest data from DSHS showing:

• Percentage of population 12+ vaccinated with at least one dose: 50.02%

• Percentage of population 12+ fully vaccinated: 43.35%

Within the county’s more vulnerable older population, the data shows the following vaccination rates:

• Percentage of population 65+ vaccinated with at least one dose: 82.09%

• Percentage of population 65+ fully vaccinated: 74.91%

Covid Act Now currently classifies Ellis County at a medium risk level, with 6.9 daily new cases per 100,000 people, an infection rate of 0.97 and a positive test rate of 7%.

It classifies the state as a whole, however, at a high risk, with 8.4 daily new cases per 100,000 people, an infection rate of 1.22 and a positive text rate of 7.5%.

As of July 15, the DSHS data dashboard showed the following data for Ellis County:

• Total confirmed cases to date: 19,035

• Total probable cases to date: 4,183

• Fatalities to date: 325

• Current active cases: 136

• Recovered cases to date: 23,003

• Total tests conducted to date: 214,279

Ellis County reported its first case of COVID-19 on March 17, 2020.
