Memorial Day, which serves to honor the men and women who have died while serving, the ultimate “Service Above Self,” is coming up on the 25th of May.

Our beautiful city will be decorated to honor this special holiday with an outcropping of American flags. Thanks to about 1,000 patriotic subscribers to the Flag Program managed by the Rotary Club of Waxahachie, these colorful flags will adorn many of Waxahachie’s streets, homes and businesses until Flag Day, Sunday, June 14.

The Rotary Club depends on subscriptions to the Flag Program for a dual purpose. First is to show patriotic pride on five major national holidays: Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day. It is a time-honored tradition of patriotism that has become an important part of the heart of Waxahachie.

The second purpose is for the Rotary Club to be able to fund its many projects of community support thereby fulfilling the Rotary International motto, “Service Above Self.”

Rotary flag subscriptions benefit the giver and others in our community. When members of our community purchase a flag subscription, they not only enjoy the beautiful American flag flown at their home or business, their generosity also goes toward programs throughout our community and around the world.

These programs include scholarships for Global High School, Waxahachie High School and Navarro College (including Brilliance), Rotary Wheelchair Foundation, Rotary International Foundation, RYLA Rotary Youth Leadership, Veterans Appreciation Day, Texas Baptist Home, Sims Library Lyceum, CASA, Scouts of America, Daniel’s Den, Interact Club of Global High School, Interact Club of Waxahachie High School, Waxahachie YMCA and the Ellis County Youth Expo. This year, we have expanded our reach to channel funds to include giving locally to assist people in our community who are suffering due to the COVID-19 virus.

The Flag Program subscription is $45 per year per flag. Once a location is paid for and registered into the Flag Program system, Rotarians, Boy Scouts and other volunteers deliver and install the flags at each requested flag location selected by the subscribers.

Once each of the five designated holiday celebration periods are over, the same group of Rotarians and other volunteers pick up and store the flags for the next holiday. The subscription fees fund the costs of purchasing the flags, keeping the materials fresh and up to date, maintenance and storage.

The Rotary Club would like to thank its subscribers for their support in the past. Also, the Rotarians would like to invite those who would like to participate in the Flag Program to get involved now.

The next flag cycle for new subscribers will be the flag placement for Independence Day. You can help keep Waxahachie patriotically proud and beautiful by supporting the Rotary Club Flag Program.
