The Waxahachie Planning and Zoning Commission will hear from H-E-B representatives Jan. 25 on their plans to expand the local grocery store with an additional 20,308 square feet of retail space to its south side.
The current building totals 99,566 square feet. In addition to increasing store space, the expansion project will also add parking to the site as well.
This is not the first time H-E-B has expanded its facilities. The first expansion was in 2014 when an additional 30,000 square feet was added on the side of the building facing Indian Drive and to the front.
The second expansion, in 2017, saw 1,600 square feet added to the building to allow the store to offer customers curbside pickup. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, H-E-B’s curbside pickup and home delivery service have been helpful tools to aid in social distancing, with customers placing their orders online or through the My H-E-B smartphone app and selecting how want to receive their items. In March 2020, when Ellis County saw its first case of covid, top stop leader Bruce Glaves told The Sun, “Our whole culture (at H-E-B) is to make sure we are taking care of people.”
A 2021 national study conducted by the global research firm Ipsos found that 78% of Americans have increased their use of in-store and curbside pickup options since the start of the pandemic. Of those surveyed, 69% said they would continue to use the e-commerce option at the same levels, if not higher.
The study also found through consumer feedback that H-E-B leads among 14 grocery chains due to in-stock availability, the ability to schedule pickup times, and good instructions on order picking. The study placed Publix at No. 2 and Aldi at No. 3. H-E-B was also named Grocer of the Year for 2020 by Grocery Dive.
Following the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, H-E-B’s expansion project will be considered by the Waxahachie City Council at its Feb. 7 meeting.
